Imagine . . .
Imagine
setting out with map and compass. A pack on your back with food, water, some spare clothes, your share of the group safety gear. You set out in early morning, dawn just a suggestion in the east. A waning cresent moon lies to the south east. To the west stars are still bright.
Imagine
traveling in the silence of the north, over the snow for an hour or so to get to this race's general location.
Imagine
trying to move fast, pacing yourself and your team through the day, at times taking advantage of other teams tracks, but seeing no one but your own team and perhaps the race marshall at a check stop.
Imagine
fighting exhaustion at the end of the day. Sunset. Darkness falling. Giving encouragement to the ones that are even more tired than you. Still with 5 kilometers left back to the start point.
